El llibre fa refer\u00e8ncia a \u00abmil a\u00f1os\u00bb, per\u00f2 evidentment aquest \u00abmil\u00bb \u00e9s un n\u00famero al\u00b7leg\u00f2ric, ja que aquesta tradici\u00f3 (com tota tradici\u00f3) no t\u00e9 un origen prec\u00eds en el temps. El llibre t\u00e9 vuit parts ordenades cronol\u00f2gicament (del 794 al 2019); una detallada introducci\u00f3, bibliografia, \u00edndex d\u2019autores, \u00edndex onom\u00e0stic, glossari de termes japonesos, i informaci\u00f3 sobre l\u2019autor. Segons l\u2019autor, les dones de l\u2019\u00e8poca Heian volien crear g\u00e8neres literaris que els homes no cultivaven (p. 91). Abans d\u2019arribar l\u2019escriptura des de la Xina al Jap\u00f3, la literatura que hi havia al Jap\u00f3 era la literatura oral i les dones n\u2019eren les transmissores. De boca en boca, van transmetre moltes llegendes, poemes o contes mitol\u00f2gics.
