I&nbsp;\u00e9s que&nbsp;aquest&nbsp;llibre&nbsp;tampoc no&nbsp;pret\u00e9n&nbsp;fer un rep\u00e0s als&nbsp;cl\u00e0ssics&nbsp;can\u00f2nics&nbsp;m\u00e9s importants&nbsp;de les cultures&nbsp;del nostre planeta&nbsp;sin\u00f3&nbsp;\u2014com molt b\u00e9&nbsp;explica Esther Calvino, la filla&nbsp;de l&#8217;autor\u2014&nbsp;sobre els&nbsp;<\/span><em style=\"color: rgb(79, 79, 79); font-family: Arial, &quot;sans-serif&quot;; font-size: 12pt;\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Arial&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">seus<\/span><\/em><span style=\"font-family: Arial, &quot;sans-serif&quot;; font-size: 12pt;\">&nbsp;cl\u00e0ssics, \u00e9s a dir, sobre les obres que, a ell, li van deixar una&nbsp;fonda&nbsp;empremta.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;\"><span lang=\"CA\" style=\"font-family:&quot;Arial&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">La coberta d&#8217;un llibre, all\u00f2&nbsp;que popularment anomenem&nbsp;\u00abla portada\u00bb, no nom\u00e9s cobreix el llibre i el protegeix sin\u00f3&nbsp;que tamb\u00e9&nbsp;\u00e9s l&#8217;eina que t\u00e9&nbsp;l&#8217;editor per a provocar-nos un amor a primera vista. N&#8217;hi ha que&nbsp;alimenten&nbsp;amors purament f\u00edsics, n&#8217;hi ha que en&nbsp;suggereixen de m\u00e9s espirituals, i n&#8217;hi ha que&nbsp;temptegen&nbsp;un&nbsp;cert&nbsp;equilibri. A tot aix\u00f2&nbsp;cal afegir el fet que la coberta ha d&#8217;intentar&nbsp;oferir&nbsp;un resum gen\u00e8ric de la mat\u00e8ria&nbsp;que&nbsp;\u00e9s&nbsp;desenvolupada&nbsp;en el llibre. En&nbsp;aquest&nbsp;cas, la fotografia \u00e9s&nbsp;molt&nbsp;escaient: Italo Calvino&nbsp;somriu&nbsp;lleugerament&nbsp;assegut en una cadira&nbsp;que t\u00e9&nbsp;un disseny molt particular i&nbsp;molt&nbsp;personal, en una habitaci\u00f3&nbsp;on hi ha centenars de&nbsp;llibres&nbsp;que&nbsp;viuen&nbsp;en altes prestatgeries.&nbsp;En efecte, aquest llibre ens parla de llibres i, com la cadira, d&#8217;un tipus de llibres de disseny especial, els anomenats&nbsp;\u00abcl\u00e0ssics\u00bb, els quals ens provoquen aquest somriure lleuger que tenim quan arribem al coneixement d&#8217;una veritat profunda que perviu m\u00e9s enll\u00e0&nbsp;d&#8217;una \u00e8poca determinada.&nbsp;El somriure d&#8217;Italo Calvino \u00e9s el somriure d&#8217;una persona que coneix la futilitat i la fragilitat de la naturalesa humana.&nbsp;I els cl\u00e0ssics que t\u00e9&nbsp;en les prestatgeries&nbsp;\u2014i dins aquest llibre\u2014, tamb\u00e9&nbsp;parlen d&#8217;aix\u00f2.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;\"><span lang=\"CA\" style=\"font-family:&quot;Arial&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">L&#8217;escriptor itali\u00e0, el qual va treballar durant molt de temps per a l&#8217;editorial Einaudi,&nbsp;de ben segur que s&#8217;adon\u00e0&nbsp;que&nbsp;els cl\u00e0ssics ens aporten coneixements que no caduquen mai. I&nbsp;no caduquen probablement perqu\u00e8,&nbsp;d&#8217;una banda,&nbsp;ens plantegen temes, situacions&nbsp;i problemes irresolubles,&nbsp;\u00aball\u00f2&nbsp;que persisteix com a soroll de fons\u00bb&nbsp;(p. 14); i,&nbsp;de l&#8217;altra, temes, situacions i problemes que s\u00f3n constants perqu\u00e8&nbsp;formen part de la naturalesa&nbsp;de&nbsp;l&#8217;\u00e9sser hum\u00e0. \u00abLa crisi d&#8217;identitat \u00e9s general a la segona meitat de l&#8217;<em><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Arial&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Odissea<\/span><\/em>\u00bb&nbsp;(p.&nbsp;22), comenta quan parla d&#8217;aquest poema hom\u00e8ric del segle&nbsp;viii&nbsp;aC; i molt despr\u00e9s, en un article sobre Eugenio Montale&nbsp;(1896-1981),&nbsp;ens explica&nbsp;que aquest escriptor \u00abens parla d&#8217;un m\u00f3n vertigin\u00f3s, emp\u00e8s per un vent de destrucci\u00f3, sense un terreny s\u00f2lid on recolzar els peus, amb l&#8217;\u00fanica ajuda d&#8217;una moral individual suspesa al caire de l&#8217;abisme\u00bb&nbsp;(p. 279).&nbsp;Tu que tens problemes per a arribar a finals de mes, \u00bfcreus&nbsp;que avui&nbsp;la vida&nbsp;\u00e9s m\u00e9s inestable i fugissera que fa&nbsp;cent anys o vint-i-nou segles?&nbsp;Tu que&nbsp;voldries&nbsp;expressar&nbsp;amb m\u00e9s detall i nitidesa&nbsp;all\u00f2&nbsp;que el&nbsp;teu&nbsp;cor i&nbsp;la&nbsp;teva ment senten,&nbsp;\u00bfcreus que els homes del Renaixement ho sabien fer millor o que, dos-cents anys despr\u00e9s, un sistema inform\u00e0tic ajudar\u00e0&nbsp;a resoldre-ho&nbsp;definitivament? Segons Calvino, Gerolamo&nbsp;Cardano (1501-1576) \u00e9s un \u00abescriptor que persegueix amb les paraules alguna cosa que s&#8217;escapa a les paraules\u00bb&nbsp;(p. 102);&nbsp;Cyrano de Bergerac&nbsp;(1619-1655)&nbsp;\u00e9s un autor en qu\u00e8&nbsp;\u00abel que compta no \u00e9s la coher\u00e8ncia de les idees, sin\u00f3&nbsp;el divertiment i la llibertat amb qu\u00e8&nbsp;es val de tots els est\u00edmuls intel\u00b7lectuals que li v\u00e9nen de gust\u00bb&nbsp;(p. 120);&nbsp;i l&#8217;actitud del fil\u00f2sof Raymond&nbsp;Queneau (1903-1976) \u00ab\u00e9s la d&#8217;explorador d&#8217;universos imaginaris\u00bb&nbsp;(p. 326).<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;\"><span lang=\"CA\" style=\"font-family:&quot;Arial&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">El llibre que el lector t\u00e9&nbsp;a les mans est\u00e0&nbsp;compost&nbsp;per&nbsp;un article introductori on Calvino reflexiona sobre qu\u00e8&nbsp;\u00e9s una obra cl\u00e0ssica, i trenta-cinc&nbsp;m\u00e9s&nbsp;on&nbsp;l&#8217;escriptor itali\u00e0&nbsp;comenta autors i obres d&#8217;\u00e8poques i g\u00e8neres molt diversos&nbsp;expressant&nbsp;opinions i suggeriments propis. Calvino&nbsp;ens convida a reflexionar tant&nbsp;sobre Xenofont&nbsp;(428-355\/0 aC),&nbsp;Ovidi&nbsp;(43aC-17dC)&nbsp;i les set princeses perses de Nezami (1141-1209)&nbsp;com sobre&nbsp;Diderot (1713-1784),&nbsp;Stendhal&nbsp;(1783-1842)&nbsp;i Balzac&nbsp;(1799-1850); tant sobre&nbsp;la necessitat de cultivar el nostre&nbsp;jard\u00ed, segons&nbsp;\u00e9s&nbsp;esmentat&nbsp;a l&#8217;obra&nbsp;<em><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Arial&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">C\u00e0ndid<\/span><\/em>&nbsp;de Voltaire (1694-1778), com sobre l&#8217;olla que bull de la vida, segons \u00e9s representada a l&#8217;obra de Gadda (1893-1973) <em><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Arial&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Quell merd\u00e9 hurrible<\/span><\/em>. I tot sempre ben amanit amb opinions personals, directes i inspiradores. Sobre Galileu&nbsp;(1564-1642), ell es pregunta: \u00ab\u00bfPer qu\u00e8&nbsp;una esfera (o&nbsp;una&nbsp;pir\u00e0mide) hauria de ser m\u00e9s perfecta que una forma natural, com per exemple la d&#8217;una llagosta?\u00bb&nbsp;(p. 113). I sobre Tolstoi&nbsp;(1828-1910)&nbsp;afirma: \u00abEl que interessa a Tolstoi [\u2026]&nbsp;\u00e9s [\u2026]&nbsp;la recerca del vodka de la hist\u00f2ria, el combustible hum\u00e0\u00bb&nbsp;(p. 200).&nbsp;O b\u00e9&nbsp;exclama, exultant,&nbsp;a l&#8217;inici d&#8217;un article&nbsp;acad\u00e8mic&nbsp;sobre&nbsp;el&nbsp;<em><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Arial&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Doctor Givago<\/span><\/em>&nbsp;de&nbsp;Pasternak&nbsp;(1890-1960): \u00abUn llibre amb el qual et discuteixes, finalment!\u00bb&nbsp;(p. 226).&nbsp;I \u00e9s que els cl\u00e0ssics tamb\u00e9&nbsp;serveixen per a discutir: ens interpel\u00b7len, ens pregunten, ens acorralen, i ens obliguen a&nbsp;reflexionar. Potser per aix\u00f2&nbsp;s\u00f3n tan perillosos; potser per aix\u00f2&nbsp;els bombers de&nbsp;Fahrenheit 451&nbsp;(obra de l&#8217;escriptor Ray Bradbury, 1920-2012)&nbsp;els cremen: perqu\u00e8&nbsp;molesten, ens posen el dit a l&#8217;ull, furguen en la ferida mal curada i fan aflorar emocions que, si les desenvolup\u00e9ssim adequadament, ens&nbsp;guaririen i serien&nbsp;protectores&nbsp;de la nostra salut f\u00edsica i mental.&nbsp;Un cl\u00e0ssic no \u00e9s un entreteniment insubstancial, ni una sobredosi de sucre rosa;&nbsp;un cl\u00e0ssic, si conv\u00e9,&nbsp;t&#8217;etziba&nbsp;un mastegot&nbsp;a la cara o et provoca un profund terratr\u00e8mol cat\u00e0rtic.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;\"><span lang=\"CA\" style=\"font-family:&quot;Arial&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Finalment, m&#8217;agradaria de confessar&nbsp;dues sensacions molt personals que he tingut amb la lectura d&#8217;aquest llibre.&nbsp;La primera \u00e9s que, malgrat que&nbsp;en el llibre&nbsp;hi ha una&nbsp;quantitat&nbsp;de materials, autors, citacions i, fins i tot, vocabulari t\u00e8cnic&nbsp;molt heterogeni i divers, tanmateix&nbsp;la versi\u00f3&nbsp;catalana&nbsp;t\u00e9&nbsp;un estil fluid, planer i gens&nbsp;enrevessat&nbsp;gr\u00e0cies, en bona mesura,&nbsp;a&nbsp;les habilitats de la traductora de l&#8217;obra.&nbsp;La segona \u00e9s que la lectura de l&#8217;article sobre&nbsp;<em><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Arial&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Tirant lo Blanc<\/span><\/em>&nbsp;(p. 71-77)&nbsp;testimonia les dificultats que&nbsp;ha tingut&nbsp;\u2014i encara t\u00e9\u2014&nbsp;la cultura catalana per a&nbsp;ser&nbsp;compresa&nbsp;a l&#8217;estranger. Italo Calvino cita un fragment de l&#8217;obra catalana i el reprodueix en castell\u00e0,&nbsp;cosa que ens&nbsp;empeny a interpretar que, ai las!, potser&nbsp;per a ell&nbsp;el castell\u00e0&nbsp;\u00e9s&nbsp;la llengua original en qu\u00e8&nbsp;el&nbsp;<em><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Arial&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Tirant lo Blanc<\/span><\/em>&nbsp;fou escrit.&nbsp;Sorpr\u00e8n que un home d&#8217;una cultura tan vasta hagi estat tan bast en aquest detall.&nbsp;Ara b\u00e9, si som honestos,&nbsp;potser la culpa sigui&nbsp;m\u00e9s aviat&nbsp;nostra, dels catalans, que&nbsp;no acabem&nbsp;de dir&nbsp;inequ\u00edvocament&nbsp;a la comunitat internacional que&nbsp;ho volem ser.<\/span><\/span><\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"rtejustify\"><span style=\"font-size:12pt\"><span style=\"font-family:&quot;Times New Roman&quot;,&quot;serif&quot;\"><span lang=\"CA\" style=\"font-family:&quot;Arial&quot;,&quot;sans-serif&quot;\">Cada llibre \u00e9s&nbsp;una&nbsp;invitaci\u00f3&nbsp;a entrar en un m\u00f3n. En el cas de Per qu\u00e8 llegir els cl\u00e0ssics, ens trobem amb trenta-cinc invitacions que condueixen a trenta-cinc mons molt peculiars que inclouen pa\u00efsos tan diferents com Fran\u00e7a, Esc\u00f2cia, Anglaterra, It\u00e0lia, R\u00fassia, Estats Units, Argentina; i \u00e8poques tan variades com l&#8217;antiga Gr\u00e8cia, l&#8217;antiga Roma, l&#8217;antiga P\u00e8rsia, l&#8217;Edat Mitjana, el Renaixement, el Barroc, el Romanticisme, el Postmodernisme&#8230;&nbsp;Aix\u00ed, doncs, futur lector, no t&#8217;atabalis. Assaboreix&nbsp;cada invitaci\u00f3&nbsp;de mica en mica.
