ISBN 978-1-4746-1898-4.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">\u00abReading is a necessary part of reality, and an unavoidable part of everyday life\u00bb<em>.<\/em> Ian Patterson plasma en aquest manifest sobre els llibres la import\u00e0ncia de la lectura en les nostres vides i el poder que t\u00e9 sobre nosaltres, tot i que no sempre en som conscients, ja que aprenem a parlar i a pensar gr\u00e0cies a la lectura.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Patterson no ha pogut fugir mai de la lectura: els llibres sempre han estat presents a la seva vida com a poeta, professor, traductor, llibreter i col\u00b7leccionista. L\u2019autor, brit\u00e0nic, ha desenvolupat la seva carrera a la Universitat de Cambridge, on va ser professor titular de literatura anglesa, i al Queen\u2019s College, on va ser cap d\u2019estudis. Aquesta traject\u00f2ria acad\u00e8mica i liter\u00e0ria li proporciona una perspectiva s\u00f2lida i profunda sobre el m\u00f3n dels llibres.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El manifest s\u2019estructura en vuit parts: introducci\u00f3 a la biblioteca; plaers de la imaginaci\u00f3; plaers culpables; escriptors oblidats, llibres peculiars o llibres \u00abper canviar el m\u00f3n\u00bb; poemes; traducci\u00f3; tradici\u00f3 i innovaci\u00f3; i, finalment, la biblioteca. El llibre cont\u00e9 un apartat de notes, bibliografia, agra\u00efments, informaci\u00f3 sobre l\u2019autor i un \u00edndex anal\u00edtic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La introducci\u00f3 ens convida a reflexionar. Ens trobem en una situaci\u00f3 de crisi cultural i pol\u00edtica: guerres, canvi clim\u00e0tic, racisme, ressorgiment de l\u2019extrema dreta\u2026 i un atac sense precedents a tots els aspectes de la cultura seriosa (\u00aban unprecedented attack on every aspect of serious culture\u00bb) (p. 1). Aquest atac es manifesta en l\u2019infrafinan\u00e7ament sistem\u00e0tic i destructiu de biblioteques, escoles, universitats, teatres, museus, galeries d\u2019art i cinemes, en general, de totes les arts i humanitats.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Davant d\u2019aquesta crisi, m\u00e9s que mai necessitem els llibres i la formaci\u00f3 de persones amb esperit cr\u00edtic. No es tracta nom\u00e9s de \u00abllegir llibres\u00bb, sin\u00f3 d\u2019entendre com la lectura ens pot ajudar a esdevenir persones amb m\u00e9s perspectiva i capacitat d\u2019an\u00e0lisi. Patterson afirma que la lectura \u00e9s un element crucial per aprendre a desenvolupar la mem\u00f2ria i per pensar per nosaltres mateixos, per obrir la ment, per estar preparats per als canvis i actuar correctament, i per imaginar que les coses poden anar a millor i mantenir aquesta esperan\u00e7a (p. 40).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">L\u2019autor defensa que hem de tractar els llibres com a un b\u00e9 preuat, no com a simples textos llegits puntualment en un dispositiu de lectura digital. Cal apreciar el llibre f\u00edsic, comprendre qu\u00e8 ens ha aportat a la nostra vida i conservar-lo a l\u2019abast de la m\u00e0 en un prestatge, a punt per ser rellegit o compartit amb amics. Les biblioteques \u2013afirma\u2013 s\u00f3n veritables dip\u00f2sits de cultura, coneixement i plaer (\u00abstorehouses of culture and knowledge and pleasure\u00bb), una part essencial del que significa ser humans i entendre la nostra humanitat compartida (p. 7).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">En les primeres seccions, l\u2019autor es q\u00fcestiona a si mateix. Quan va haver de traslladar-se a un habitatge m\u00e9s petit, es va adonar que no tenia espai per a tots els llibres. Aquesta situaci\u00f3 el va portar a preguntar-se qu\u00e8 representaven realment els llibres per a ell i per qu\u00e8 sentia la necessitat constant d\u2019adquirir-ne m\u00e9s. Patterson reconeix que els llibres han contribu\u00eft decisivament a construir la seva identitat: des de petit somiava tenir una biblioteca pr\u00f2pia, un espai que simbolitz\u00e9s formaci\u00f3, mem\u00f2ria i vida intel\u00b7lectual.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A la secci\u00f3 dedicada als llibres peculiars o rars, Patterson acaba esdevenint ell mateix una figura peculiar, ja que explica com ha anat llegint llibres de tota mena al llarg de la seva vida, buscant alguna cosa \u00abperduda\u00bb o oculta, alguna \u00abpe\u00e7a de coneixement que contingu\u00e9s el sentit de tot\u00bb (p. 132). Per\u00f2 precisament suggereix que \u00e9s aquesta curiositat el motor mateix de la lectura i la necessitat de descobrir all\u00f2 que no sab\u00edem que necessit\u00e0vem con\u00e8ixer (p. 137).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">La secci\u00f3 sobre traducci\u00f3 \u00e9s especialment interessant, ja que l\u2019autor hi reivindica el paper del traductor com a mediador cultural. La traducci\u00f3 no \u00e9s una simple transposici\u00f3 ling\u00fc\u00edstica, sin\u00f3 un exercici d\u2019interpretaci\u00f3 i recreaci\u00f3. La feina d\u2019un traductor realment \u00e9s descobrir qu\u00e8 s\u2019amaga darrere de les paraules, i no nom\u00e9s traduir-les d\u2019una llengua a una altra (p. 208). Aqu\u00ed es percep clarament la veu del Patterson traductor, conscient dels guanys que implica cada pas entre lleng\u00fces.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Quan aborda la relaci\u00f3 entre tradici\u00f3 i innovaci\u00f3, el manifest adquireix un to m\u00e9s reflexiu. Patterson defensa que la innovaci\u00f3 liter\u00e0ria no pot existir sense una consci\u00e8ncia profunda del passat. Les hist\u00f2ries explicades als llibres al llarg dels temps adquireixen diferents tons influ\u00efts pels contextos hist\u00f2rics i moviments art\u00edstics del moment. \u00c9s per aix\u00f2 que per escriure cal llegir i entendre el passat, d\u2019aquesta manera s\u2019adquireixen noves idees i hi haur\u00e0 creacions innovadores. Llegir els cl\u00e0ssics no \u00e9s un gest nost\u00e0lgic, sin\u00f3 una manera d\u2019entrar en di\u00e0leg amb generacions anteriors i d\u2019entendre que tota creaci\u00f3 s\u2019inscriu en una continu\u00eftat.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">El retorn final a la biblioteca tanca el cercle del llibre amb coher\u00e8ncia. La biblioteca no \u00e9s nom\u00e9s un espai f\u00edsic, sin\u00f3 un s\u00edmbol on conflueixen mem\u00f2ria, desig, identitat i comunitat. Potser els llibres no et canviaran la vida immediatament, per\u00f2 la milloraran (\u00abThey may not change your life, or not straight away, but they\u2019ll make it better\u00bb) (p. 273). Llegir, debatre i escriure ajuda les persones a trobar la seva pr\u00f2pia veu, a reflexionar amb profunditat i a sentir-se segurs del que pensen (\u00abReading and discussing and writing helps people find their own voice, work out for themselves what they think, on the basis of actual evidence, and gives them the confidence to articulate it\u00bb) (p. 274).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><em>Books: a manifesto: or, How to build a library<\/em> no \u00e9s nom\u00e9s una oda als llibres: \u00e9s una invitaci\u00f3 a reflexionar sobre la lectura, la mem\u00f2ria i la literatura. \u00c9s una defensa passional de com la lectura ens ajuda a formar els nostres pensaments i a desenvolupar l\u2019esperit cr\u00edtic.
