‘To be honest, they’re mainly a way to waste time… but they also help me learn things’: the complexities of teens’ social media motivations

Authors: Marta Meneu (@laprestatgeria) i Maria-Jose Masanet (@mjmasanet)

This article presents a map of the motivations of young people to use the different social networks that we have available today. Based on an ethnographic study with adolescents between 14 and 18 years old from various educational centers in the metropolitan area of Barcelona, they are asked what they use the different social networks they have.

The results of the research allow us to update the studies based on the theory of Uses and Gratifications applied to the digital context and, with the responses of young people, we can identify seven main motivations: entertainment, knowledge acquisition, emotion management, establishment of social interactions, realization of economic transactions, creation of an own image, and access to other spaces.
