GAMMA Women: Pioneers in communication, gender and human rights

CRICC researcher Priscila Álvarez Cueva participates in the publication of the book MUJERES DE LA COMUNICACIÓN ECUADOR edited by Vanessa Vanegas Tola and Julia Ortega Almeida, contributing with the chapter «Mujeres GAMMA: porque el mensaje no es inofensivo. Pioneers in communication, gender and human rights».

MUJERES DE LA COMUNICACIÓN ECUADOR is a book that navigates the diversity of shores on which Ecuadorian women move, the diversity of narratives and spaces for dialogue and also the permanent decision to continue strengthening one’s own voice. The three axes of the book are an exercise of epistemic justice, as well as a light on the future of communication in Ecuador and in the region.

Chapter summary

Fundación Gamma is a pioneering organization recognized for its work in the field of communication and gender, in particular the Observatorio Ciudadano de la Comunicación (Citizen Communication Observatory). Based on an interview with Sandra López, in this chapter I gather fragments of the history, some educational and communicational practices, as well as several social impacts that have taken place as a result of Gamma’s work for almost thirty years. Specifically, I review the motivations and actions that, from a corner of the radio station Ondas Azuayas, in the city of Cuenca -and by the hand of women communicators-, have been carried out, generating not only a greater recognition of the work of women in communication or as an instrument of it, This has also led to greater social and professional awareness, which extends to the areas of corporate communication and advertising, and even to the transformation of these actions, reviews and complaints into public policies that improve communication practices in Ecuador. In this chapter I embrace, applaud and highlight how Gamma contributes to a responsible practice of communication, also generating spaces for debate and education unique worldwide, building a more critical and assertive society when consuming different communication and advertising products in the media.
