LGTBIQ+ rights and media influence: the discourses of Barcelona’s teenagers.

New publication of the TRANSGELIT project. CRICC researcher Anna Iñigo, together with Vítor Blanco-Fernández and Maria Aran, have published the article «Teenagers, media usage, and attitudes toward LGBTIQ+ issues: An ethnographic approach to Barcelona’s students» in the JournalLGBTYouth.

The article analyzes the discourses of adolescents in Barcelona around rights and LGBTIQ+ people, focusing on exploring the influence exerted by the media on these discourses.

For this purpose, ethnographic research was carried out between March 2022 and May 2023 in three educational institutions in the metropolitan area of Barcelona. The study involved 59 participants between 14 and 18 years old, spanning diverse identities and backgrounds. The data collected during the research were coded and analyzed qualitatively.

The results are presented in four main areas: (1) Overinformation, misinformation and confusion; (2) Media use; (3) LGBTIQ+phobia; and (4) LGBTIQ+ self-perception and responses. The article contributes to ‘LGBTIQ+ Media Studies’ by incorporating ethnographic methods in this field. In addition, it provides information for education professionals and social agents that can be used in subjects and activities that include aspects of gender diversity and sexuality.
