The journal Estudos Feministas publishes the article of the TRANSGELIT project “The archetype of the ‘dead-but-not-gone girl’ in Netflix teen series: dead and voiceless”. An article by CRICC researchers Maria José Masanet, Maddalena Fedele and Margarida Carnicé that analyzes the female protagonist characters in the series 13 Reasons Why and Élite.
The aim of this article is to analyze the representation of the dead-but-not-gone girl archetype in two teen series of the Netflix platform: 13 Reasons Why (2017-2020) and Élite (2018-). To do so, as an analysis technique, we conducted in-depth reading of the first season of each series. The results point to the representation of inactive female characters who end up being the object of desire -and obsession- of the male characters, who seek answers and/or revenge for their death. They become, in this way, a kind of “addressees”, characters that motivate or move the active subject (the boys) of the story. Moreover, being dead, their voice is compromised or conveyed through the discourse of other characters. They are voiceless girls who are placed in the memory and torment the living characters.
