Call for papers: Current panorama of LGBTIQA+ Studies in the media in the Ibero-American academy.

Vítor Blanco Fernández and Laura Fernández Aguilera, researchers of the research project ‘Transmedia Gender & LGBTI+ Literacy’ (I+D+i Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación), linked to the Gender, Inclusion and Diversities research line of the CRICC, edit a special issue of the journal MariCorners to be published in early 2025. The issue is dedicated to the ‘Current Panorama of LGBTIQA+ Studies in the media in the Ibero-American academy’. Through this special issue, they wish to pay special attention to the particular idiosyncrasies of queer studies in Ibero-American contexts, as well as to the main challenges, debates and critical perspectives in their current landscape.

Papers are invited on the historiography of the field of study, vindicating the people who promoted it, its evolution, the instruments used, as well as the intergenerational dialogue in the academy. Likewise, special attention will also be paid to the methodologies employed by queer media analysis and debates on the most appropriate methods for LGBTIQ+ research.

Another key theme for this call are the current challenges and debates in the field of research, including but not limited to: non-binary representation, animation as queer content, new digital media, the study of representation on streaming platforms, among others. Within the challenges and debates, a special interest in works that incorporate an intersectional theoretical and methodological perspective (Crenshaw 1989; Rodó-Zárate 2021), with a focus on anti-racism, social class difference, critical animal studies, neurodivergence, fatphobia, ableism, etc., stands out. The monograph also focuses on the uses of language (or languages) used in Ibero-American contexts. This covers (among other aspects): translation; the use of Anglo-Saxon terms and their symbolic frameworks in analysis; the use (or underuse) of minoritised languages in research; and the linguistic terms, frameworks and epistemologies of minoritised languages in the study of queer representation. Reviews of books that address these challenges, debates and critical LGBTIQ+ voices in the Ibero-American environment are also welcome.

We encourage you to participate in this monograph! The deadline for submissions will be open until 15 June 2024. For more information: https://revistas.uva.es/index.php/maricorners/announcement/view/105
